We love shea butter!

Extracted from the fruit of the African shea tree, Butyrosperum parkii syn. Vitellaria paradoxa, this emollient is a giant among skin moisturizers. It is easily absorbed and rich in antioxidants. We use both refined and unrefined shea butter.

Good for All Skin Types

Besides having a long list of skin-healthy benefits, we were surprised to learn that it is non-comedogenic, that is, it does not clog pores.

Hypoallergenic

There are no documented cases of topical shea butter allergies. Even people with tree nut allergies should be able to use shea butter on their skin. That's according to many sources.

The basis of our Brown Windsor soap comes from Perfumery and Kindred Arts, a Comprehensive Treatise on Perfumery by Richard Cristiani, published in Philadelphia in 1877. Even then, the author referred to the recipe as Old Brown Windsor Soap. The original soap was made in Windsor, England, and exported around the world. Brown Windsor was said to be a favorite of Napoleon, a notorious lover of scent. Cristianis recipe called for lavender, bergamot, caraway, petitgrain, cinnamon, and clove. We tested various proportions of these essential oils and chose the blend we found most satisfying.

These two ancient fragrances have been revered for over 5,000 years. As with all our soaps, Herbaria does not use imitation fragrances. To make this soap, we add genuine steam distilled essential oils imported from Somalia. These costly oils account for the bars premium price. The frankincense is derived from a resin of the Boswellia carterii tree; the myrrh is a resin from the Commifora myrrha tree. Finely ground Rhassoul clay, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, is marbled into this bar to provide a mineral-rich toner. Shea butter, also from Africa, moisturizes and protects your skin. Our May Chang bar is guaranteed to energize your day and put you in a sunny mood. May Chang smells intensely lemony yet the fragrance is sweeter and fruitier. The bar is smooth and creamy with a golden yellow color from turmeric. What is may chang? It is the common name of Litsea cubeba, a member of the Laurel family growing in East Asia. Its leaves are loaded with citral, which also imparts the scent to lemon verbena. Lemon verbena essential oil, used in perfumes, would be too expensive to use in our soap. Besides, honestly, we think may chang smells brighter and fresher. The first-rate cleansing benefits of this bar work well for face and body.
