When the Missouri Botanical Garden asked us to create an exclusive bar honoring its 150th anniversary, we crafted this uniquely herbal and peppery soap. We tested many blends of plant oils to develop the bars sophisticated fragrance. When we were finally satisfied, we sent a bar to perfumer Thierry Masson of La Rochelle, France, to evaluate the scent. He wrote back enthusiastically. This bar has good balance, its woody, fresh and spicy. Each ingredient of the soap reflects the Gardens mission to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment.

Straight from the mountains of Europe comes the essential oil in our irresistible Silver Fir and Lavender. We chose this specific fir from many possible evergreen oils because of its soft, lovely balsam-like fragrance. To fully develop the bouquet of the soap, we added lavender and a touch of cade (Juniperus oxycedrus)—a smoky, cedar-like essential oil we hadnt offered before. We know many people love our Evergreen bar, which LaRee created years ago. It is an extra-exfoliating bar with oatmeal and seaweed. Silver Fir and Lavender is a smooth, creamy bar with French green clay. The clays micro molecules absorb excess oils, toxins and impurities from your skin, help you treat complexion problems, and tone your skin. Almond oil is added for extra moisturizing. We use another favorite essential oil, Sugandha Kokila, not well known in the U.S., but treasured in perfumery in this original bar. Kokila, commonly called laurel berry, comes from a tree that grows in the Himalayas in Nepal. We combined the sweet bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the laurel berry (Cinnamomum glaucescens), two stellar fragrances from the Laurel family. The result: this magically enchanting Sugandh Kokila soap. The fragrance is aromatic and spicy, camphor-like, warm and woody.

This might be the happiest bar of soap ever, a fragrant marriage of citrusy orange and sweet vanilla. To impart the yummy vanilla aroma, we use a natural vanilla infusion made with pods of the orchid Vanilla planifolia. The fresh orange scent comes from 5-fold orange essential oil.

Customers have been asking for a vanilla bar for many years but we steadfastly refuse to use synthetic fragrance oils. Recently, however, we have discovered a source for a natural vanilla infusion that we find absolutely delightful. You will too. You will love the homey, fresh baked, mellow fragrance of pure vanilla. Perhaps this is not a bar, but a cake of soap. And making this cake moist and rich is extra virgin organic coconut oil. The coconut also sweetens the vanilla scent. The cakes are a soft caramel color with tiny flecks of ground vanilla beans. Still, they are buttery smooth in texture.

Vetiver has long been a popular scent with both women and men, and is often used as the base note in both perfumes and colognes. Vetiver imparts a robust, woody aroma, warm and comforting. In this soap, vetiver is one of three essential oils that complement each other deliciously. Coriander adds a touch of spiciness, may chang a lemony freshness. If you have been a fan of our Indonesian Safflower bar, you’ll also enjoy this close cousin. Vetiver Walnut is more earthy; Indonesian Safflower a bit more floral. Finely ground English walnut shells add a scrub that invigorates and exfoliates your skin as you soap up. You will feel fully clean. To top off your skin care, we have added sweet almond oil for a soothing moisturizer.

Friend of Herbaria and local artist, James McKenzie, has graced our store with his custom-carved wooden soap dishes. James uses a digital router to carve each piece to exacting specifications. The result is a beautiful piece worthy to hold something as good as our soap. They are finished with food-grade mineral oil. This is the same finish found on a butcher block or cutting board. The soap dishes are 4.25" in width (front face) by 3.25" in depth and 2" tall. All the current stock is made of maple wood.
