Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is colorless, odorless, viscous, sweet-tasting and non-toxic. It is formed in all of our soaps during saponification, when the oils and lye combine. We value the retained glycerin. It is a humectant, which attracts and retains moisture from the air. Glycerin is used in many commercial moisturizers.

Kokila, commonly called laurel berry, comes from a tree that grows in the Himalayas in Nepal. We combined the sweet bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the laurel berry (Cinnamomum glaucescens), two stellar fragrances from the Laurel family. The result: this magically enchanting Sugandh Kokila soap. The fragrance is aromatic and spicy, camphor-like, warm and woody.

The basis of our Brown Windsor soap comes from Perfumery and Kindred Arts, a Comprehensive Treatise on Perfumery by Richard Cristiani, published in Philadelphia in 1877. Even then, the author referred to the recipe as Old Brown Windsor Soap. The original soap was made in Windsor, England, and exported around the world. Brown Windsor was said to be a favorite of Napoleon, a notorious lover of scent. Cristianis recipe called for lavender, bergamot, caraway, petitgrain, cinnamon, and clove. We tested various proportions of these essential oils and chose the blend we found most satisfying.

These two ancient fragrances have been revered for over 5,000 years. Renowned as the gift of the Magi to the baby Jesus, and even more valuable than the gold they brought, frankincense and myrrh offered treasures in addition to their heavenly scents. As with all our soaps, Herbaria does not use imitation fragrances. To make this soap, we add genuine steam distilled essential oils imported from Somalia. These costly oils account for the bars premium price. The frankincense is derived from a resin of the Boswellia carterii tree; the myrrh is a resin from the Commifora myrrha tree. Finely ground Rhassoul clay, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, is marbled into this bar to provide a mineral-rich toner. Shea butter, also from Africa, moisturizes and protects your skin. Indonesian Safflower makes people crazy. In addition to the lovely safflower blossoms scattered throughout the bar, it contains a heady blend of sweet basil, ylang ylang, vetiver and patchouli. It's our strongest scented soap. After a bath with this, you'll be looking for your sari. Basil oil is said to aid concentration and clarify the mind and ylang ylang is reputed to stimulate the senses and induce feelings of well-being. You will definitely feel altered after an experience with this bar.

When the Missouri Botanical Garden asked us to create an exclusive bar honoring its 150th anniversary, we crafted this uniquely herbal and peppery soap. We tested many blends of plant oils to develop the bars sophisticated fragrance. When we were finally satisfied, we sent a bar to perfumer Thierry Masson of La Rochelle, France, to evaluate the scent. He wrote back enthusiastically. This bar has good balance, its woody, fresh and spicy. Each ingredient of the soap reflects the Gardens mission to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment.

In this soap, vetiver is one of three essential oils that complement each other deliciously. Coriander adds a touch of spiciness, may chang a lemony freshness. If you have been a fan of our Indonesian Safflower bar, you’ll also enjoy this close cousin. Vetiver Walnut is more earthy; Indonesian Safflower a bit more floral. Finely ground English walnut shells add a scrub that invigorates and exfoliates your skin as you soap up. You will feel fully clean. To top off your skin care, we have added sweet almond oil for a soothing moisturizer.

The bright yellow color of our Saffron Gold comes from Spanish saffron. You can see its yellow-orange threads throughout the bright yellow bar. This treasured spice in the soap adds a sensuous scent to the citrusy blend of nine essential oils. This soap not only looks and smells good, its also really good for you. Saffron Gold is superfatted with mango butter, expeller pressed from the seeds of mangos. The butter softens, soothes and moisturizes dry skin. Saffron is one of the plants used to dye the robes of Buddhist monks. If you see a bit of yellow on your washcloth, try laundering it with oxygen bleach.
