Glycerin Soaps and Products

Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is colorless, odorless, viscous, sweet-tasting and non-toxic. It is formed in all of our soaps during saponification, when the oils and lye combine. We value the retained glycerin. It is a humectant, which attracts and retains moisture from the air. Glycerin is used in many commercial moisturizers.

The basis of our Brown Windsor soap comes from Perfumery and Kindred Arts, a Comprehensive Treatise on Perfumery by Richard Cristiani, published in Philadelphia in 1877. Even then, the author referred to the recipe as Old Brown Windsor Soap. The original soap was made in Windsor, England, and exported around the world. Brown Windsor was said to be a favorite of Napoleon, a notorious lover of scent. Cristianis recipe called for lavender, bergamot, caraway, petitgrain, cinnamon, and clove. We tested various proportions of these essential oils and chose the blend we found most satisfying.

These two ancient fragrances have been revered for over 5,000 years. Renowned as the gift of the Magi to the baby Jesus, and even more valuable than the gold they brought, frankincense and myrrh offered treasures in addition to their heavenly scents. As with all our soaps, Herbaria does not use imitation fragrances. To make this soap, we add genuine steam distilled essential oils imported from Somalia. These costly oils account for the bars premium price. The frankincense is derived from a resin of the Boswellia carterii tree; the myrrh is a resin from the Commifora myrrha tree. Finely ground Rhassoul clay, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, is marbled into this bar to provide a mineral-rich toner. Shea butter, also from Africa, moisturizes and protects your skin. We believe you will find this soap a royal treasure.

The lemony, floral notes of our Italian Bergamot bar come from essential oil of bergamot, extracted from the peel of an orange-like citrus fruit that grows in southern Italy along the Mediterranean coast. The bergamot essential oil we use is bergaptene free so theres no problem in regards to sun exposure. The soft, spicy scents in the soap come from lavender and clove, which blend with the bergamot to make an especially fresh and clean aroma. We add hemp seed oil as a skin softener. Aromatherapists believe that bergamot perks you up when you feel stress and anxiety. We think you will enjoy this delightfully fragrant soap.

There's old-time goodness in this all-vegetable Castile soap. Old Fashioned Lye Soap is great for bathing, shampooing, and washing clothes. Its only scent is the pure, clean soap smell. The old soap-making process we use retains natural glycerin. We don't want to brag, but this is probably a finer soap than Grandma used to make. We start with fresh food-grade oils in our bars. Welcome to an extraordinary shower. Luffa soap will quickly become your skins BFF. We’ve incorporated our moisturizing soap into whole natural luffas (also spelled loofah). The ones we use come directly to us from Egypt. Luffa aegyptiaca is a member of the Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family that includes squash, pumpkins and zucchini. When young and tender, sponge gourds are eaten. When mature, they are used for a natural scrub. You will see why luffas have been used for thousands of years. They have a perfect texture for the job: not too rough but just right.
