Glycerin Soaps and Products

Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is colorless, odorless, viscous, sweet-tasting and non-toxic. It is formed in all of our soaps during saponification, when the oils and lye combine. We value the retained glycerin. It is a humectant, which attracts and retains moisture from the air. Glycerin is used in many commercial moisturizers.

The ones we use come directly to us from Egypt. Luffa aegyptiaca is a member of the Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family that includes squash, pumpkins and zucchini. When young and tender, sponge gourds are eaten. When mature, they are used for a natural scrub. You will see why luffas have been used for thousands of years. They have a perfect texture for the job: not too rough but just right.

Our May Chang bar is guaranteed to energize your day and put you in a sunny mood. May Chang smells intensely lemony yet the fragrance is sweeter and fruitier. The bar is smooth and creamy with a golden yellow color from turmeric. What is may chang? It is the common name of Litsea cubeba, a member of the Laurel family growing in East Asia. Its leaves are loaded with citral, which also imparts the scent to lemon verbena. Lemon verbena essential oil, used in perfumes, would be too expensive to use in our soap. Besides, honestly, we think may chang smells brighter and fresher. The first-rate cleansing benefits of this bar work well for face and body. In addition, it is said to relieve oily skin and acne and provide a calming effect on the nervous system.

You'll race to the shower to use our newest soap, Mojito. Named after the refreshing rum cocktail of spearmint and lime juice, this non-alcoholic bar will clean and invigorate you and your skin. Thanks to Blake, our soapmaker, for its creation. The scent comes from lime and spearmint essential oils perfectly balanced for a bracing summer treat. The moisturizer in Mojito is luxurious unrefined shea butter. French green clay combines with ground parsley to provide the bright green color and adds an extra creaminess to the lather. We rejoice in the effort to normalize relations between the U.S. and Cuba. If you get to visit, take some extra bars for the Cubanos. They'll certainly appreciate it.

We added oatmeal for scrubbing and French green clay for thicker lather. Some customers were so happy with Natural Citronella and Marigold soap they are reluctant to try Campers Choice. For them, we still make the old bar.

There's old-time goodness in this all-vegetable Castile soap. Old Fashioned Lye Soap is great for bathing, shampooing, and washing clothes. Its only scent is the pure, clean soap smell. The old soap-making process we use retains natural glycerin. We don't want to brag, but this is probably a finer soap than Grandma used to make. We start with fresh food-grade oils in our bars. Together they make a bar that is moisturizing, that lathers well, and is long-lasting.
