hand-rolled incense

Each tube contains seven sticks, and each stick burns for about an hour. They are quite fragrant. You may choose to burn just a part of a stick at a time.

All are made with the powdered bark of the makko tree, Machillus thunbergii. This bark is naturally combustible—no need for charcoal or saltpeter. There is no punk stick to burn as the incense dough is extruded and hand-cut, resulting in pure, resinous, and herbal material.

The result is a beautiful piece worthy to hold something as good as our soap. They are finished with food-grade mineral oil. This is the same finish found on a butcher block or cutting board. The soap dishes are 4.25" in width (front face) by 3.25" in depth and 2" tall. All the current stock is made of maple wood.

Luffas (also spelled loofahs) have been used for bathing since the days of the pharaohs. Indeed, these whole luffas are grown in the Nile Delta of Egypt where they get enough sun to grow to mammoth size. They provide an invigorating, gentle scrub to exfoliate dead skin and leave it glowing. Luffas are the fibrous skeletons of fruits from a vegetable in the cucumber and gourd family. All luffas are not created equal. On the left is Luffa aegyptica, which is soft and gentle when wet. The luffa on the right is L. acutangula, hard and rough. Our luffas are unbleached. They are shipped to you dried and compressed. Soak one in water for a minute and it will expand. A whole luffa expands to 20-26 inches long. Cut it into pieces or use it whole. Many people mistakenly think luffas are sea creatures but they grow on a vine.

Saffron Gold is superfatted with mango butter, expeller pressed from the seeds of mangos. The butter softens, soothes and moisturizes dry skin. Saffron is one of the plants used to dye the robes of Buddhist monks. If you see a bit of yellow on your washcloth, try laundering it with oxygen bleach.

Kokila, commonly called laurel berry, comes from a tree that grows in the Himalayas in Nepal. We combined the sweet bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and the laurel berry (Cinnamomum glaucescens), two stellar fragrances from the Laurel family. The result: this magically enchanting Sugandh Kokila soap. The fragrance is aromatic and spicy, camphor-like, warm and woody.

Rosemary has a long history as a favorite fragrance. Some time in the 1300s, it was the key ingredient in the famous perfume, Hungary water. Legend tells of a queen of Hungary, who, wearing the fragrance at the age of 72, captivated the King of Poland in a romantic liaison. For the next 500 years, until the French started producing eau de Cologne in the Eighteenth Century, no other herb enjoyed the popularity of rosemary either as a scent or as a natural remedy. No wonder one of our most beloved soaps is Rosemary. We blend three essential oils to create this scent. It is predominately rosemary but tempered with lavender and softened with rose-like palmarosa. Our May Chang bar is guaranteed to energize your day and put you in a sunny mood. May Chang smells intensely lemony yet the fragrance is sweeter and fruitier. The bar is smooth and creamy with a golden yellow color from turmeric. What is may chang? It is the common name of Litsea cubeba, a member of the Laurel family growing in East Asia. Its leaves are loaded with citral, which also imparts the scent to lemon verbena. Lemon verbena essential oil, used in perfumes, would be too expensive to use in our soap.
